The mission of St Matthias is summarized as "Following Jesus, Serving People." The people of St Matthias are often engaged in both hands-on and supportive ways of offering "a cup of cold water" (Matthew 10:42) to others. Occasional but regular outreach initiatives include ongoing support of the Youth Empowerment & Support Services (YESS) and the Edmonton Food Bank. The REACH Campaign is a 2014 campaign for mission & ministry at both the parish level and the whole of the Diocese of Edmonton: the many generous pledges from our membership means there are a variety of new initiatives taking shape as part of our mission and ministry...
Edmonton Food Bank Community Depot: Weekly on Thursdays members and friends of St Matthias open the doors from 4:30-5:30pm as a distribution centre on behalf of Edmonton's Food Bank. If you would like to volunteer to help with this work, you are most welcome to contact our office to find our how you can join in!
Collective Kitchens: There are two separate 'Collective Kitchens' -- the 'Neighbourhood' Collective and the 'Seniors' Collective. Each meets once/month to have a lot of fun cooking and baking together for an afternoon. The cost to participate is very low, and meals are then divvied up and taken home by participants. This initiative draws on food supplied through the Edmonton Food Bank as well as on our REACH funding, and is led by parish members Dawn Ritz, Pat Carson, Sharron Hostland, and Bev O'Brien.
Inner City Pastoral Ministry: twice/year the people of St Matthias prepare food and a team of people attends Sunday worship and serves Sunday lunch at the Inner City Pastoral Ministry, an interdenominational mission at the Bissell Centre. This work is coordinated by Sharron Hostland with the support and assistance of many.
Common Threads: a knitting group! Meeting weekly on Tuesdays from 9:30am to noon, these folks represent a number of different of churches in the surrounding area, gathering to knit items such as prayer shawls to be given to those who are in need of prayer as a sign of care, and blankets for those staying at WIN House. This group is always open to new members and guests.
Anglican Church Women (ACW): The St Matthias chapter of the ACW is currently led by Bev Singh. The ACW is active in many ways in our parish, from social events and gatherings for the women of the parish, to unique events such as the Spring Dessert & Tea and the Parish Bazaar that connect with the wider community and generate funds that are deployed primarily in support of a number of community and non-profit service organizations.
PWRDF: The Primates' World Relief and Development Fund is a branch of the Anglican Church of Canada dedicated to responding to cases of emergency (i.e., Relief) and to fostering the well-being of various communities world-wide through long-term projects (i.e., Development). There are always a number of different projects to explore and support. The children of St Matthias have most recently been giving offerings through fall 2018 toward a gift from the PWRDF gift guide at Christmas. For more information, speak to our parish rep to the PWRDF, Beverly O'Brien. She will be happy to talk and brings us updates from time to time.
